A Merkava Mark IV tank crew from the 401st Armored Brigade carried out an unexpected civilian rescue on 3 February 2024, when they saved a group of Arab residents trapped inside a burning apartment building near the Gaza border town of Netiv HaAsara.

The incident occurred during intense fighting between the IDF and the Hamas terror organization.

According to the IDF, the tank crew—commanded by Captain Omer Tal, with gunner Sergeant Yarin Mizrahi, loader Corporal Daniel Hadad, and driver Corporal Shai Ben‑Ami—was conducting a patrol along the northern Gaza perimeter when they observed flames and smoke rising from a residential structure approximately 600 meters east of their position.

Thermal imaging from the Merkava’s MATADOR fire‑control system detected human movement inside the building, prompting Captain Tal to request permission to break from their route and approach the site.

The crew reported hearing explosions from inside the structure, later determined to be rupturing gas canisters, and saw civilians signaling for help from a second‑floor window.

Because the area was under intermittent mortar fire, ground rescue teams could not reach the building quickly, leaving the tank crew as the closest available responders.

Captain Tal maneuvered the 65‑ton Merkava to shield the building from incoming fire while Sergeant Mizrahi used the tank’s external communication system to direct the civilians toward a partially collapsed stairwell.

Corporal Hadad and Corporal Ben‑Ami then dismounted, carrying fire‑retardant blankets and a medical kit stored in the tank’s rear compartment, and entered the smoke‑filled structure.

They located five civilians—two women, two children aged seven and nine, and an elderly man—trapped behind a jammed metal door that had warped from the heat.

Using a breaching tool kept on the Merkava for urban‑combat contingencies, the soldiers forced the door open and escorted the civilians outside, where the tank provided cover as flames spread through the upper floors.

All five civilians were evacuated to Barzilai Medical Center in Ashkelon, where they were treated for smoke inhalation and minor burns.

The IDF Spokesperson’s Unit later stated that the tank crew’s actions demonstrated “initiative, discipline, and humanity under fire,” and the brigade commander, Colonel Benny Aharon, recommended the crew for commendation.
