Will AI replace IDF commanders?

The accelerating integration of artificial intelligence into the IDF has prompted debate over whether machines will eventually replace human commanders.

Most experts believe AI will not replace them, but they will fundamentally reshape how they think, decide, and fight.

Modern warfare produces unprecedented volumes of data from hundreds of simultaneous sources, including UAVs, SIGINT platforms, satellite imagery, cyber sensors, and ground robots.

Systems such as Torch-X, Fire Weaver, Tzayad (Digital Army Program), and Rafael’s Fire Factory generate and process millions of data points per hour.

Human cognition alone cannot absorb this information before it loses operational value.

AI’s primary function is cognitive augmentation.

It filters incoming data, fuses intelligence streams, detects operational patterns, prioritizes threats, classifies targets, and updates a dynamic Common Operational Picture (COP).

According to IDF figures released in 2024, AI-assisted target generation increased strike efficiency by 50–70% in certain brigades, while autonomous detection systems identified enemy rocket teams in Gaza with latencies under three seconds.

At the tactical level, artificial intelligence is already taking on decision‑making roles, increasingly enabling autonomous action under human oversight. A remote interceptor confronting a swarm of UAVs cannot relay every choice back to a control center.

AI systems can function without GPS, operate when communications are disrupted, track and classify targets, recognize objects, choose movement paths, intercept threats, and coordinate with other unmanned platforms.

Commanders now make decisions based on richer, more accurate, and more current situational awareness.

Commanders are freed to focus on the aspects of warfare that still depend on human judgment: interpreting the operational environment, weighing competing demands, evaluating risks, navigating uncertainty, directing mission command, and applying professional military expertise.

Despite these advances, commanders remain indispensable.

AI cannot replace human judgment in assessing risk, interpreting context, balancing priorities, or exercising mission command.

Commanders must still determine intent, manage uncertainty, and apply professional military experience.

AI simply compresses decision cycles from minutes to seconds, allowing commanders to focus on inherently human responsibilities.

At the tactical level, AI already makes micro‑decisions.

Autonomous interceptors such as Rafael’s Drone Dome, robotic vehicles like IAI’s Jaguar and Elbit’s Rook, and loitering munitions including Harpy NG and Mini-Harpy navigate without GPS, operate under degraded communications, track targets, and coordinate with other unmanned systems.

Similar autonomous capabilities have emerged in Ukraine’s FPV drone networks and NATO’s Mission Master UGVs.

So for the foreseeable future AI will not replace IDF commanders.

Instead, machines will execute human intent at speeds no human can match, forming human‑machine teams that define the future of warfare rather than human‑machine competition.
