Israeli intelligence operatives captured Muein al‑Arabid, the head of Hamas’s internal security apparatus in Gaza, in what officials described as one of the most daring undercover operations of 2026.
According to multiple reports, the operation took place on September 1, 2026, in a densely populated Hamas‑controlled neighborhood of Gaza City.
Israeli special forces from the Shin Bet and the IDF Southern Command infiltrated the area disguised as aid distributors, blending into the humanitarian traffic that regularly moves through Gaza’s urban zones.
Although Israeli statements did not explicitly confirm the disguise, Arabic‑language media and foreign reports indicated that undercover operatives posing as civilian relief workers approached al‑Arabid’s location shortly before noon, enabling them to get close enough to seize him without triggering immediate armed resistance.
This tactic mirrors earlier Shin Bet methods used in covert arrests during the Second Intifada, where operatives frequently posed as laborers or merchants to penetrate hostile environments.
During the raid, Israeli airstrikes provided tactical cover.
Al‑Arabid, long considered one of Hamas’s most powerful security officials, was responsible for concealing Israeli hostages taken during the October 7, 2023 attacks and for coordinating Hamas’s efforts to rebuild its command structure in northern Gaza.
