The Elbit Systems TORCH-X Robotic and Autonomous Systems (RAS) application represents a massive paradigm shift in modern military operations, providing an open-architecture command-and-control framework that successfully drives heterogeneous robot swarming across multi-domain battlefields.

Developed by Israel-based defense contractor Elbit Systems, this platform-agnostic software relies heavily on artificial intelligence and machine learning algorithms to unify completely separate unmanned systems into a single, cohesive, self-coordinating unit.

By shifting the control paradigm away from one operator steering one machine, TORCH-X RAS allows a single soldier using a seven-inch ruggedized display unit to efficiently direct entire autonomous fleets, heavily decreasing cognitive overload for frontline commanders.

The operational capabilities of the system were put on full display during a rigorous demonstration for the Royal Netherlands Army’s Robotic Autonomous Systems Concept Development and Experimentation Programme.

During this field trial, Gil Maoz, Vice President of Elbit Systems C4I and Cyber, highlighted how integrative AI effectively orchestrates Manned-Unmanned Teaming missions.

The demonstration utilized the software to manage a swarm comprising three THOR Vertical Takeoff and Landing mini-Unmanned Aerial Systems alongside Roboteam’s PROBOT Unmanned Ground Vehicle.

Operating in tandem, the aerial drones dominated the designated airspace to scan the environment for up to eight hours, automatically relaying real-time video data to pinpoint target coordinates before directing the ground vehicle to complete a highly precise tactical intelligence picture.

Beyond reconnaissance, the TORCH-X framework integrates seamlessly with specialized combat platforms like the 1,200-kilogram ROOK 6×6 UGV, which features a 24-centimeter ground clearance and can carry payloads up to 1,200 kilograms at speeds reaching 30 kilometers per hour.

Guided by the built-in TORCH-X suite, such ground assets dynamically distinguish between diverse physical terrains like grass or stone to execute complex functions, including autonomous casualty evacuations, supply deliveries, and remote weapons system deployment.

Global defense ministries have rapidly recognized the tactical value of this system;

Elbit Systems UK was contracted by the British Army to deliver five autonomous swarms of six unmanned aircraft each, strictly powered by TORCH-X RAS to modernize surveillance capabilities.

By fusing advanced electronic payloads with machine intelligence, Elbit’s command architecture successfully transforms isolated ground and air assets into network-centric combat solutions.
