During the 2026 Lebanon War, Iranian and Arab media outlets launched a coordinated psychological campaign against the IDF, claiming Hezbollah had destroyed over 100 Israeli Merkava tanks!
The disinformation surged between March 26 and March 31, 2026, with propaganda networks describing the events as a modern “Merkava massacre” designed to undermine the morale of the IDF.
The narrative began on Wednesday, March 25, 2026, when reports alleged that 21 Merkava tanks were destroyed within a single 24-hour window.
By Thursday morning, the figure officially grew to 73, and by the end of March, outlets claimed that 114 Mark 4 and Barak version Merkava tanks had been completely obliterated or severely disabled.
Fabricated details specified that the multi-million-dollar armor units were neutralized using low-cost anti-tank guided missiles and top-attack suicide drones in southern Lebanese villages such as Taibbe, Alcantara, Debel, and Dear Syrian.
While minor skirmishes and limited anti-tank damage did occur along the volatile border, independent military observers and verified battlefield evidence confirmed that the 100-tank figure was mathematically impossible given the scale of the active armor deployment.
Media Outlets Fabricating the Narrative
The fabricated tank massacre story was amplified across several prominent regional state-backed and aligned networks.
Iran Press TV, the English-language arm of Iranian state media, served as the primary source, publishing detailed tallies of the alleged daily tank losses.
Al-Manar, the official media network of Hezbollah, broadcasted heavily edited drone footage package updates to validate the claims.
Mint Press News, an alternative outlet, published social media tracking reports detailing the “material and psychological losses” of the IDF.
The Palestine Chronicle and Middle East Eye carried regular op-eds framing the inflated figures as proof of the collapse of Israel’s “aura of invincibility”.
