The IDF confirmed that Bernie, a highly trained Oketz K9, was killed during a recent operation in the dense urban terrain of Bint Jbeil in southern Lebanon.

Her death prompted an outpouring of grief from her handler and fellow soldiers who had served alongside her for years.

Bernie, a Belgian Malinois approximately four years old, belonged to the elite Oketz canine unit, which has been deployed extensively since the escalation of cross‑border fighting with Hezbollah in late 2023.

According to IDF statements, Bernie was sent ahead of infantry forces from the 551st Brigade during a sweep of a multi‑story structure believed to contain Hezbollah terrorists.

As she entered the building, she detected movement and alerted her handler seconds before an explosive device detonated.

The blast killed her instantly but prevented casualties among the soldiers positioned behind her.

Her handler, identified only as Sgt. “N,” said she had worked with Bernie since the dog was a ten‑month‑old trainee at the Oketz base near Tel Nof.

She described Bernie as exceptionally fast, with a detection accuracy rate above 90 percent during training exercises.

Bernie had already participated in more than a dozen operational missions in the western sector of southern Lebanon.

The IDF reported that Bernie’s actions in Bint Jbeil likely saved the lives of at least three soldiers from the 551st Brigade who were preparing to enter the same room moments after her warning signal.

Bint Jbeil, a Hezbollah stronghold since the early 2000s and the site of heavy fighting during the 2006 Lebanon War, has again become a focal point of clashes.

IDF engineering units, Golani infantry, and Oketz teams have been operating there for weeks, encountering booby‑trapped homes, tunnel entrances, and short‑range ambushes.

Bernie is the latest of several Oketz dogs killed in action since the beginning of the current conflict, though the IDF does not publish exact casualty numbers for the unit.

Sgt. N said she plans to attend a memorial at the Oketz headquarters, where Bernie will be honored alongside other dogs who died protecting soldiers.

“She did exactly what she was trained to do,” the handler said.

“She gave her life so that we could come home alive.”
