Israeli troops crossed the Litani River during a special operation deep inside southern Lebanon, killing Hezbollah terrorists and uncovering major underground infrastructure in one of the most significant ground maneuvers of the current campaign, the IDF announced Tuesday.
The operation was carried out over the past week by a Golani Brigade combat team operating under Division 36, including forces from the Egoz commando unit and the Golani Reconnaissance Unit.
According to the military, troops advanced into the area of Zawtar al-Sharqiyah, roughly 10 kilometers from the Israeli border, as part of an effort to establish operational control over parts of the Litani sector long used by Hezbollah for rocket launches, weapons storage, and covert movement.
During the operation, Israeli troops uncovered Hezbollah staging compounds, weapons depots, launchers, and extensive underground routes containing large quantities of arms. The Israeli Air Force carried out strikes on more than 100 targets in support of the ground forces.
The IDF said dozens of Hezbollah terrorists were killed during the fighting, including in close-quarters battles and coordinated air-ground operations directed by troops on the ground.
Engineering units simultaneously worked to establish several crossing points over the Litani River, allowing the movement of larger numbers of troops and armored vehicles as operations in the area continue.
Lt. Col. B., commander of the Golani Reconnaissance Unit, said forces captured “key objectives” while exposing Hezbollah infrastructure above and below ground.
“Golani reconnaissance forces encountered terrorists in face-to-face combat and eliminated them,” he said. “The fighters operated with courage and determination.”
The operation comes as Hezbollah continues launching rockets and explosive drones toward Israeli forces and northern communities despite ceasefire understandings, with the IDF intensifying operations aimed at pushing Hezbollah infrastructure farther from the border and preventing future infiltration attacks into northern Israel.
