“We are but a chapter in an ancient story, a living link in the chain of generations,” Zamir said.

At a memorial candle-lighting ceremony at the Western Wall on Sunday evening, IDF Chief of Staff Lt. Gen. Eyal Zamir framed Israel’s ongoing struggle as part of a continuous chain of Jewish history, linking ancient battles to the present day.
Standing at the site, Zamir reflected on the symbolic weight of the moment, quoting historian Yosef Klausner: “These stones are more than stones. They are living testimony to what was, and they hold the hope for what will be.”
He said the Western Wall embodies thousands of years of Jewish resilience, adding that “we are but a chapter in an ancient story, a living link in the chain of generations.”
Tracing that legacy, Zamir invoked figures from across Jewish history, from Abraham and King David to Judah Maccabee, and connected them to modern-day Israeli fighters.
He pointed to recent battles, including the October 7 attacks, highlighting the actions of Capt. Daniel Perez and his tank crew, who “understood they were the last line of defense between the murderers and civilians.”
“This is the command that has guided our fighters since the dawn of our revival,” Zamir said. “It beats in the hearts of our soldiers today.”
He emphasized that Israel remains in the midst of a complex and ongoing war across multiple fronts, saying the country has “stood as a fortified wall” while striking those who seek to destroy it. He cited operations against Hamas in Gaza, Hezbollah in Lebanon, and Iran, stating that Israel “did not remain silent in the face of its historic mission.”
“We attacked with force and thwarted the regime’s plans,” he said, referring to Iran. “We will continue to stand guard and will not allow Iran to realize its ambitions.”
Zamir underscored the role of Israeli society as a whole in sustaining the military effort, describing the IDF as “the people themselves,” with reservists and their families forming “the beating heart of the war.”
Addressing bereaved families, he acknowledged the depth of their loss. “We remain without words in the face of your pain,” he said. “We walk alongside you, carrying the burden of loss together.”
He added that the IDF remains committed to missing soldiers and the wounded, pledging continued efforts “to return those who did not come back and to stand by those who bear the physical and emotional scars of war.”
In closing, Zamir stressed the importance of unity, saying Israel must remain “bound together by a shared mission of security and responsibility,” and warned that national cohesion is essential for survival.
“Here, at the foot of the Western Wall, we remember the fallen and the command they left us,” he said. “To stand together, to defend our people, and to ensure the eternity of Israel.”
