Yonah Betzalel Brief’s story is remembered as one of the most extraordinary displays of determination, courage, and refusal to surrender in the history of the Israel Defense Forces.

Sgt. First Class Yonah Betzalel Brief, a 23‑year‑old Israeli‑American combat medic in the elite Duvdevan unit, was critically wounded in May 2023, during an elite Duvdevan unit counterterrorism operation in Tulkarem.

In that battle, Brief was hit by shrapnel from an explosive device, suffering serious wounds that required hospitalization and rehabilitation.

Commanders expected him to take an extended recovery period, but Brief insisted on returning to active duty as soon as he was medically cleared.

That decision that placed him on the front lines on October 7th.

After returning to duty five months later, on October 7th, 2023, he was severely injured during the battle for Kibbutz Kfar Aza, one of the hardest‑hit communities in the Hamas attack.

Brief and his small commando team fought house‑to‑house against heavily armed terrorists.

During the fighting, he was shot 13 times, sustaining catastrophic injuries that included massive internal damage and the eventual amputation of both legs.

Despite the severity of his wounds, Brief remained conscious long enough to help guide another medic through his own treatment — a moment repeatedly described by doctors and commanders as almost superhuman.

Brief’s evacuation marked the beginning of a second battle: a 417‑day fight for life at Sheba Medical Center.

His parents, David and Hazel Brief, recounted how their son endured multiple organ failures, 11 pneumonias, and countless surgeries.

Doctors warned the family dozens of times to prepare for the worst, yet each time Brief rallied back, astonishing medical staff who described him as “indestructible” and “a miracle beyond medical explanation.”

Throughout his long hospitalization, Brief became a national symbol.

He was visited by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Defense Minister Yoav Gallant, IDF Chief of Staff Herzi Halevi, and famous singers such as Idan Amedi and Yishai Ribo.

His insistence on putting on tefillin every day — even while connected to tubes, machines, and monitors — deeply moved the public.

His mother said he embodied the spirit of “don’t quit,” while his father compared him to the Hanukkah oil that miraculously burned longer than expected.

After over a year on life support, Sgt. First Class Yonah Betzalel Brief passed away on November 27, 2024.

His 417‑day struggle left a profound imprint on Israeli society.

He is remembered not only as a fallen soldier, but as a young man whose willpower, faith, and refusal to give up inspired an entire nation.
