Maj. Gen. Omer Tishler formally assumed command of the Israeli Air Force on Tuesday, taking over from Maj. Gen. Tomer Bar at a ceremony held at Tel Nof Airbase, as Israel’s military leadership used the occasion to underscore the country’s heightened readiness amid ongoing regional tensions.
IDF Chief of Staff Lt. Gen. Eyal Zamir delivered the central address, framing the transition against the backdrop of a prolonged, multi-front conflict and growing concerns over developments in the Persian Gulf.
“Our forces are deployed across all arenas, fighting and ready at immediate readiness for any scenario, near and far,” Zamir said. “The IDF, across all its systems, maintains a high level of readiness. We are closely monitoring developments in the Persian Gulf and are prepared to respond with force to any attempt to harm Israel.”
Zamir highlighted a significant expansion in the Air Force’s capabilities, describing a “historic decision” to procure two additional fighter squadrons, alongside ongoing acquisition of helicopters, drones, and aerial refueling aircraft.
“The force build-up of the Air and Space Force is, in practice, the force build-up of the IDF and the State of Israel as a whole,” he said.
He praised the outgoing commander, Maj. Gen. Tomer Bar, for leading the Air Force through one of the most complex periods in Israel’s history.
“You developed new capabilities in both defense and offense, established unprecedented cooperation with our American partners, and created new methods for achieving air superiority and dismantling enemy systems,” Zamir said. “You left our enemies stunned and stripped them of much of their capabilities.”
Incoming commander Maj. Gen. Omer Tishler emphasized continuity in mission and focus, particularly in light of ongoing threats. “We will not allow our enemies to build up on our borders,” he said.
“The Air Force is operating and will continue to operate with determination, strength, and responsibility to remove threats, in every arena, at every range, against every enemy.”
Tishler made clear that Iran remains a key concern. “We are closely monitoring developments in Iran and are prepared to take the entire Air Force eastward if required,” he said, noting that Israeli aircraft are already engaged in operations across multiple fronts, including against Hezbollah in Lebanon.
Reflecting on the October 7 attacks, Tishler described them as a “searing military failure,” adding, “We did not meet our mission that day in defending the citizens of Israel. I will carry that failure with me forever.”
Outgoing commander Maj. Gen. Tomer Bar described his tenure as one marked by both operational intensity and national significance.
“The Air Force took part in operations to apply military pressure and in direct missions to return the hostages,” he said. “We conducted a deep and honest investigation into October 7, with a commitment to learning and improvement.”
The ceremony marked not only a change in leadership but also a clear message from Israel’s top military command. As tensions persist across multiple fronts and attention turns increasingly toward Iran, the IDF signaled it remains prepared to act decisively wherever and whenever required.
