Maglan (Unit 212), an elite IDF commando unit within the 89th “Oz” Brigade, specializes in deep-penetration reconnaissance and precision strikes behind enemy lines using advanced weaponry and technology.

Established in June 1986 primarily as an anti-tank force following lessons from the 1973 Yom Kippur War, the unit was created to neutralize Syrian armored threats and later evolved to target SCUD missiles in Iraq and high-value infrastructure in Lebanon and Gaza.

Its name, meaning “Ibis” in Hebrew, symbolizes adaptability, a trait reflected in its operators’ ability to execute complex missions in hostile environments ranging from urban tunnels to mountainous terrain.

Unlike regular infantry or even other commando units like Sayeret Matkal, Maglan focuses heavily on technological integration, employing guided missiles like the Spike and “Iron Sting” mortars, and maintaining a dedicated R&D cell for classified tools.

Soldiers undergo 18 months of grueling training, including parachuting, navigation, and camouflage, with a dropout rate exceeding 60%, before joining a unit that reports directly to the IDF General Staff rather than regional commands.

Maglan’s operational history includes pivotal roles in the 2006 Second Lebanon War, where “Operation Beach Boys” saw the unit destroy 150 Hezbollah targets, including 40 rocket launchers, reducing fire on northern Israel by 40%.

During the 2014 Operation Protective Edge in Gaza, Maglan forces eliminated over 50 Hamas terrorists and destroyed cross-border tunnels, though three soldiers—St.-Sgt. Matan Gotlib, St.-Sgt. Omer Hay, and St.-Sgt. Guy Algranati—were killed in a booby-trapped shaft.

In the ongoing “Iron Swords” War since October 2023, Maglan has led assaults in Gaza City’s Al-Shati camp and Khan Yunis, destroying anti-tank squads and observation posts while suffering 14 casualties in the initial days of the conflict.

The unit’s unique blend of stealth, technological superiority, and deep-strike capability distinguishes it as the IDF’s premier force for disrupting enemy rear areas and eliminating strategic threats before they reach the front lines.
