Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI) launched the DIAMOND concept, a distributed warfare solution designed to modernize existing frigates instead of building expensive new warships.
Developed under IAI’s Chairman and CEO Boaz Levy, the system avoids the costs of conventional fleet expansion by utilizing smaller, companion “wing-ships” that deploy alongside a mother frigate.
Because it heavily defers or replaces the need to build massive new warships, it represents astronomical savings over traditional shipbuilding budgets, which can reach billions of dollars.
Instead of costly new assets, this concept rapidly turns legacy vessels into advanced, multi-mission fleets.
According to Guy Barlev, IAI’s Executive Vice President and General Manager, the architecture is specifically designed to match and even surpass the capabilities of new platforms.
The wing-ships operate modular payloads that function seamlessly as if they were built directly onto the main vessel.
Equipped with standard container configurations, these systems can be completely replaced, reconfigured, or deployed within just hours.
The system provides a massive upgrade by dramatically expanding the available deck space, firepower, and number of interceptors.
It integrates a variety of cutting-edge technology developed by IAI, including Harpy, Harop, and Mini-Harpy suicide drones, Blue Spear cruise missiles, LORA ballistic missiles, BARAK MX advanced air defense systems, and counter-drone technologies.
This distributed framework enables a frigate to execute offensive and defensive missions simultaneously while keeping it fully integrated with the mothership’s radar and fire control systems.
By eliminating lengthy integration processes and reducing operational timelines, navies worldwide can achieve continuous modernization in response to shifting geopolitical threats.
Following the unveiling, the DIAMOND concept has been presented to modern navies globally, allowing international maritime forces to contend with the proliferation of drones and long-range precision weapons.
Navies currently adopting or evaluating these kinds of modular distributed warfare concepts from IAI gain rapid deployment abilities and immediate mission adaptability in complex operational arenas.
