The IDF has launched a transformative initiative to modernize their armored corps training through a $107 million contract awarded to Elbit Systems.

This ambitious project involves the construction and operation of advanced tank simulation and training centers, designed to enhance combat readiness for both regular and reserve units.

The centers will be built and maintained over a three-year period, followed by 15 years of operational support, and will utilize Elbit’s OneSim simulation software integrated with the IDF’s cloud infrastructure.

These new facilities mark a significant departure from traditional training methods, which relied heavily on live-fire drills and classroom instruction.

The simulation centers offer immersive, scenario-based environments that replicate real battlefield conditions, including urban combat, night operations, and electronic warfare.

Unlike previous systems, they provide real-time feedback and performance analytics, allowing commanders to assess tactical decision-making, coordination, and accuracy instantly.

This data-driven approach replaces subjective evaluations and enhances the precision of training outcomes.

The centers also support team-based tactical training, enabling entire tank crews and platoon-level units to train together in networked simulations.

This fosters greater cohesion and communication, which were previously limited in isolated or fragmented training setups.

The shift is particularly timely as the IDF faces a shortage of fighters in the Armored Corps.

As of August 2025, tank training time has been cut in half, with conversion courses for reserve brigades reduced to just five days.

Units such as Brigade 4 are transitioning from Merkava Mark 4 tanks to older Mark 3 models, necessitating rapid retraining that these simulation centers are uniquely equipped to provide.

Strategically located within the Bahadim City training campus in the Negev, the centers are part of a broader infrastructure upgrade that includes 120 buildings, 12 schools, technical workshops, logistics hubs, and residential facilities.

The campus emphasizes eco-friendly construction and digital integration to support modern warfare demands.

By reducing reliance on fuel, ammunition, and physical equipment, the simulation-based approach is both cost-effective and sustainable.

This modernization effort reflects the IDF’s commitment to maintaining operational excellence amid evolving threats and resource constraints.

With Elbit Systems at the helm, the new training centers represent a leap forward in military preparedness, ensuring that Israeli tank crews remain agile, informed, and battle-ready in an increasingly complex combat landscape.
