In a historic milestone for modern aerial combat, an Israeli Air Force F-35I “Adir” stealth fighter shot down an Iranian Yak-130 fighter jet over Tehran on Wednesday morning, marking the first time an operational F-35 has destroyed a manned enemy aircraft in air-to-air combat.

The Israeli military said the interception occurred after the stealth aircraft identified the Iranian jet as posing a threat to Israeli freedom of action during ongoing operations over Iran.

The engagement marks the first confirmed air-to-air kill for the fifth-generation fighter since the F-35 entered service with militaries around the world, an achievement Israeli officials described as a significant milestone in the aircraft’s operational history.

Israel operates a unique variant of the aircraft known as the F-35I “Adir,” a modified version of the standard F-35A specifically adapted for the Israeli Air Force. The aircraft integrates Israeli-developed electronic warfare systems and a flexible digital architecture that allows for the integration of Israeli weapons, avionics, and mission systems.

These modifications are designed to enhance the aircraft’s survivability and improve its ability to operate within Israel’s broader network of air, intelligence, and defense capabilities.

Like other F-35 variants, the Adir is equipped with advanced sensors and electronic warfare systems that provide pilots with a real-time, 360-degree view of the battlefield, enabling them to detect, track, and respond to threats at long range.

Following the mission, Israeli Air Force Commander Maj. Gen. Tomer Bar personally spoke with the pilots who carried out the operation, praising their performance and highlighting the significance of the achievement.

“The historic shootdown over the skies of Tehran is a reflection of the strength of the Israeli Air Force and your personal determination,” Bar told the pilots.

He also commended the pilots’ coordination and professionalism during the engagement.

“You received excellent training. I saw how you closed in and coordinated with the other pilots in the formation. I am extremely proud of all of you,” he said.

Bar concluded by emphasizing that the mission was part of an ongoing effort.

“The war continues. Return safely, get some rest. The next mission is already waiting for you.”
