In a powerful speech on the eve of Israel’s 2025 Memorial Day for Fallen Soldiers and Victims of Terrorism, Lt. Gen. Eyal Zamir, Chief of Staff of the Israel Defense Forces, emphasized the nation’s enduring spirit, reported the Jewish News Syndicate. As the flag flew at half-staff, Zamir expressed a collective vow to overcome adversity, rebuild, and reinforce the security of the State of Israel.

Reflecting on the deep historical roots of Jewish resilience throughout centuries of exile, he highlighted remembrance as an essential aspect of national identity. Zamir paid homage to the sacrifices made by Israel’s defenders, from the early pioneers and Holocaust survivors to modern-day soldiers confronting terrorism on various fronts, including Gaza and Lebanon.

This year’s observance is particularly poignant following the October 7, 2023, attacks by Hamas, which left a significant mark on the national psyche and introduced new security threats. He noted the addition of “many new names” to the memorial walls in the wake of recent turmoil.

Zamir reinforced the moral obligation to honor the past while striving for a future of growth and security. He reaffirmed the military’s commitment to rescuing hostages held by enemy forces and ensuring the safety of all citizens.

As the nation prepares to shift from mourning to celebrating its 77th Independence Day, Zamir called upon the people to honor the legacy of the fallen by demonstrating strength, unity, and vigilance. He concluded with a powerful message: “Only then shall we be worthy of the legacy of the fallen.”
