The IDF and the Israel Ministry of Defense are turning to the commercial technology sector to address a dangerous gap in national airspace defense.

In August 2026, the Directorate of Defense Research and Development (DDR&D) officially issued a public Request for Information (RFI) and a Request for Demonstration (RFD) to field-test innovative systems capable of detecting and localizing hostile unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) through existing commercial cellphone networks.

This urgent procurement initiative follows a dramatic, asymmetrical evolution in regional drone warfare.

Military planners have noted that traditional radar and radio frequency tracking tools are proving increasingly insufficient against advanced, low-altitude systems that bypass standard electronic jamming.

Hostile actors, such as Hezbollah in Lebanon, have increasingly integrated commercial communications infrastructure to operate long-range, first-person view (FPV) drones.

This threat landscape mirrors international tactics, such as Ukraine’s deployment of Operation Spiderweb in June 2025, which demonstrated how effectively drones can utilize civilian mobile networks for command, control, and real-time navigation.

To counter this, the DDR&D requires mobile, adaptable tracking solutions that can move alongside IDF combat units operating deep within hostile terrain.

Instead of relying on traditional stationary base station radars, the defense establishment is seeking specialized sensors and software that can scan cellular frequencies, isolate the specific data link between a drone and its operator, and pinpoint the exact coordinates of the airborne threat.

The defense ministry has set a tight deadline of August 30, 2026, for technology developers to submit their formal proposals.

Submissions must meet strict threshold conditions to ensure the technology can be deployed rapidly under active combat conditions.

This technology push comes amidst intensive, round-the-clock counter-UAV efforts overseen by Defense Minister Israel Katz and IDF Chief of Staff Eyal Zamir.

While the military recently achieved an estimated 70 % interception rate against explosive UAVs using traditional kinetic and electronic methods, the penetration of mobile-enabled drones requires an immediate paradigm shift.
