In a remarkable blend of tradition and tactical innovation, the IDF has introduced portable Sefer Torahs designed specifically for field conditions.
These “tactical Torah scrolls” allow soldiers to maintain spiritual connection and observance even in the midst of combat zones and remote deployments.
Unveiled by the IDF’s Military Rabbinate, the field version of the Sefer Torah is housed in a weatherproof Holy Ark that can be worn like a backpack.
This design ensures the scroll is protected from humidity, mud, and harsh environmental conditions.
The carrying case doubles as a small podium—or bimah—allowing scripture to be read respectfully without placing the Torah on the ground, which is forbidden in Jewish tradition.
The initiative was developed in response to the operational challenges faced during the outbreak of war on October 7, 2023.
Prior to this innovation, Torah scrolls were transported in containers that were neither comfortable nor adequately protective.
The new design includes short legs on the case, enabling it to stand securely on uneven terrain while keeping the scroll elevated and clean.
These portable Torahs are more than just logistical solutions—they’re symbols of resilience and faith.
For soldiers deployed for extended periods, they offer a vital spiritual anchor, allowing for impromptu prayer services and moments of reflection amid the chaos of war.
As of recent reports, there are at least a dozen field-ready Sefer Torahs specifically designed for IDF use in combat zones and remote deployments.
These scrolls are part of a broader initiative to provide spiritual support to soldiers wherever they are stationed, especially during times of war or extended operations.
In addition to these tactical Torahs, organizations like the International Young Israel Movement (IYIM) have donated over 200 traditional Sefer Torahs to IDF bases across Israel over the years.
These are typically housed in base synagogues and used during regular services and ceremonies.
So while the number of portable, field-specific Torahs is currently limited, the overall presence of Torah scrolls within the IDF is extensive and growing.
