The body transferred by Hamas to Israel overnight has been positively identified as Tal Chaimi, a reservist of the IDF’s Paratroopers Brigade, head of Kibbutz Nir Yitzhak’s emergency response squad, and a devoted father and husband, who was murdered by Hamas terrorists during the attack on his community on October 7, 2023.
In a statement Tuesday morning, the Israeli Prime Minister’s Office confirmed that the National Center for Forensic Medicine had completed the identification process for the remains transferred via the International Committee of the Red Cross Monday night.
“IDF representatives informed the family of hostage Sgt.-Major Tal Chaimi, of blessed memory, that their loved one had been returned to Israel and his identification had been completed,” the PMO said. “The Government of Israel shares in the deep sorrow of the Haimi family and all the families of the deceased hostages.”
Chaimi, 41, served as head of the kibbutz’s emergency response squad and dedicated his life to protecting his community. As the grandson of the kibbutz’s cofounders, he carried a deep sense of responsibility for the safety and well-being of his neighbors, leading with courage and calm in the face of danger.
That fateful morning, Tal sprang into action when reports indicated terrorists were infiltrating Nir Yitzhak.
While his wife Ela and their children secured themselves in the home’s shelter, Tal went out to confront the threat, putting himself on the line to defend the community.
During the ensuing gun battle, he and his squad partner Lior Rudaeff were killed. Their bodies were taken and held in Gaza before being returned to Israel.
“Einav, Nir and Udi, your father was killed doing what he believed in more than anything – he protected us and the kibbutz, a kibbutz where he grew up and raised a family,” Ela said at a funeral service held before his body was returned. “He didn’t hesitate for a moment when he left the house that morning.”
Even in the face of violence, Tal’s actions exemplified steadfast bravery and selflessness. His leadership, calm under fire, and unwavering dedication to others left an indelible mark on his community and on all who knew him.
Chaimi is survived by his wife Ela, who was pregnant with their fourth child at the time of his murder, their four children, his father, and his sister.
His memory lives on as a symbol of heroism, sacrifice, and devotion to family and homeland.
