The IDF and Shin Bet announced Wednesday morning that Mohammed Odeh, Hamas’s newly installed military chief, was killed in an Israeli strike in northern Gaza overnight.

The strike was first disclosed Tuesday night in a joint statement from the Prime Minister’s Office, which said the operation was carried out under the direction of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defense Minister Israel Katz.

Odeh had recently taken command of Hamas’s military wing following the elimination of Izz al-Din al-Haddad two weeks ago. Before that, he served as head of Hamas’s intelligence apparatus and played a central role in coordinating the group’s operational planning.

According to the IDF, Odeh was responsible for planning infiltration routes and attack targets used by Hamas terrorists during the October 7 massacre.

Israeli officials said the strike followed months of intelligence gathering and operational surveillance aimed at tracking Odeh and members of his network. Several buildings in Gaza City believed to be serving as hideouts were targeted during the operation, including a nearby apartment used by a Hamas operative who participated in the October 7 attacks and assisted Odeh.

Throughout the war, the military said Odeh continued directing attacks against Israeli civilians and IDF forces while overseeing Hamas intelligence efforts tied to future terror operations.

The Prime Minister’s Office described him as “one of the architects of the October 7 massacre,” saying he was responsible for the “murder, abduction, and wounding of many Israeli citizens and IDF soldiers.”

“We will continue to pursue anyone who took part in the October 7 massacre,” the statement said. “Sooner or later, Israel will reach them all.”

The IDF said Odeh was among the last remaining senior Hamas commanders directly involved in planning and carrying out the October 7 attack, describing his elimination as a major blow to Hamas’s attempts to rebuild its military leadership.
