The Israeli military has been a powerful incubator for cutting-edge technologies that later transformed into successful civilian industries.
Here are four standout innovations that began in the IDF and went on to achieve global success:
1. Cybersecurity Startups – Check Point, Palo Alto Networks
Military Origin: Unit 8200 is the IDF’s elite cyber intelligence unit.
Its veterans have used ideas formulated during their service to found or lead companies like Check Point, Palo Alto Networks and the NSO Group.
These technologies now protect banks, hospitals, and governments worldwide from cyber threats.
2. Mobileye – Autonomous Driving
Military Origin: Founder Amnon Shashua served in IDF tech units.
During his army service he concentrated on vision-based systems for navigation and tracking enemy targets.
These technologies later formed that basis of Mobileye’s driver-assistance systems now used in millions of vehicles globally, enhancing road safety.
3. Medical Innovations from Battlefield Tech
Evacuation algorithms used in combat have been adapted for emergency response systems.
Smart bracelets developed by IDF cadets to monitor vitals are now used in hospitals and elder care.
These tools improve triage, remote monitoring, and patient outcomes.
4. Satellite Tech
Real-time satellite surveillance and target identification for military usage has been adapted adapted for agriculture (crop monitoring), urban planning, and disaster relief.
