Israel’s Defense Ministry and the IDF are preparing for the introduction of the military’s next-generation “Ro’em” artillery system with a new advanced training facility under a NIS 600 million agreement with Elbit Systems.

The Defense Ministry’s Directorate of Defense Procurement, together with the IDF Ground Forces, signed a 15-year agreement with Elbit to establish a dedicated facility for training commanders and soldiers in the Artillery Corps.

The facility will support two of the Artillery Corps’ main new firepower platforms: the Ro’em, also known as SIGMA, self-propelled howitzer and the Lahav PULS rocket-launching system.

The approximately NIS 600 million contract includes the development and supply of advanced technological training infrastructure, as well as instruction, maintenance and comprehensive logistical support.

According to the Defense Ministry, the project represents a major step in preparing the Artillery Corps for the new systems’ full entry into operational service.

The new training framework is intended to allow soldiers to make full use of the systems’ operational capabilities while significantly shortening training and qualification periods. It is also expected to improve soldiers’ professional proficiency while reducing costs and the use of operational platforms for training.

The facility will include physical training infrastructure, advanced classrooms, driving and mission simulators and other training systems.

“The agreement we signed represents significant news for strengthening the IDF’s power and readiness, and directly reflects the Defense Ministry’s strategy of enhancing operational readiness, strengthening Israeli industry and ensuring a long-term technological and logistical response for forces in the field,” said Ze’ev Landau, head of the Defense Ministry’s Directorate of Defense Procurement.

“The combination of advanced training and simulation technologies with a comprehensive, long-term support package will help the Artillery Corps realize the full firepower potential of the Ro’em cannon and the new systems, while achieving savings and optimal use of resources,” he added.

Boaz Cohen, general manager of Elbit Systems’ Land division, said the company had developed “one of the world’s most advanced training and instruction systems” for the IDF Ground Forces.

“The artillery school and training system for Artillery Corps soldiers will enable the corps to provide high-quality and efficient training to maintain the fire array at the highest level of readiness,” Cohen said.
