Israel’s rapidly expanding role in the American lunar program is becoming one of the most consequential international partnerships in the modern space race.

NASA’s return to the Moon under the Artemis program relies on dozens of global contributors, yet Israel—despite operating with an annual space budget of roughly $70–80 million, far smaller than NASA’s $25 billion—has emerged as a critical provider of niche technologies that the United States cannot easily source elsewhere.

This collaboration accelerated after Israel signed the Artemis Accords in 2022, formally integrating its scientific institutions and private aerospace sector into future lunar missions.

One of Israel’s most influential contributions is astronaut protection.

Deep‑space radiation remains one of the greatest obstacles to establishing permanent lunar bases, with solar particle events capable of delivering lethal doses within minutes.

The Israeli startup StemRad, founded by Dr. Oren Milstein, developed the AstroRad radiation‑shielding vest, which flew aboard NASA’s Artemis I mission in November 2022.

Peer‑reviewed results published in 2023 confirmed that AstroRad significantly reduced exposure to high‑energy particles inside the Orion spacecraft.

NASA and the Canadian Space Agency selected AstroRad for crew use on Artemis II, making it the first Israeli technology worn by astronauts on a lunar‑bound mission.

Israel is also deeply embedded in Artemis payload development.

The Israel Space Agency (ISA) and NASA jointly opened calls for 6U and 12U CubeSat missions, enabling Israeli universities and companies to design nanosatellites that will orbit the Moon and Earth to study radiation, communications, and lunar surface conditions.

Under the EXPAND accelerator, Israeli startups such as Tedence Space are developing AI‑driven systems to monitor electromagnetic fields for astronaut medical diagnostics, while Omnidrill is adapting robotic drilling platforms to construct underground infrastructure on the Moon and Mars.

In the field of space‑resilient computing, Israel is providing NASA with hardware capable of operating in extreme radiation environments.

Ramon Space, named after Israeli astronaut Ilan Ramon, produces radiation‑hardened processors that allow advanced AI algorithms and cloud‑computing functions to run directly aboard satellites.

These “orbital AI farms” strengthen U.S. space‑network redundancy at a time when rival nations are accelerating their own lunar communications systems.

Experimental launch technologies are also emerging from Israel: Moonshot Space is developing electromagnetic accelerators intended to send cargo capsules, food, and fuel to lunar bases without chemical rockets.

Space security is another pillar of cooperation.

Under the FUTURES Act of 2026, U.S. Space Command and Israeli defense agencies began co‑developing next‑generation protection systems for satellites.

Israel’s Iron Beam laser program, originally designed for ground‑based missile defense, is being adapted into concepts for space‑based directed‑energy weapons capable of clearing debris and defending American and Israeli satellites from jamming or anti‑satellite attacks.
