The arrival of the first “Gideon” KC‑46A Pegasus aerial‑refueling aircraft in Israel marks one of the most significant upgrades to the Israeli Air Force’s long‑range strike capabilities since the introduction of the F‑15I Ra’am in 1998.

The aircraft, delivered to Nevatim Airbase in early 2026, is part of a planned fleet of eight KC‑46A tankers, replacing the aging Boeing 707 “Re’em” refuelers that have served the IAF for more than 60 years.

The KC‑46A, produced by Boeing Defense, Space & Security, carries over 96,000 kilograms of fuel, nearly double the capacity of the Re’em, and can refuel multiple aircraft simultaneously using both boom and hose‑and‑drogue systems.

This dramatically expands the operational radius of Israel’s F‑35I Adir, F‑15I Ra’am, and the upgraded F‑16I Sufa, enabling sustained long‑range missions deep into the Middle East without requiring U.S. tanker support.

Current IAF long‑range strike capability relies heavily on the limited number of Re’em tankers, which require extensive maintenance and lack modern defensive systems, restricting the number of aircraft that can participate in extended‑range operations.

With the KC‑46A, the IAF gains the ability to support continuous multi‑wave strike packages at ranges exceeding 2,000 kilometers, covering strategic theaters such as Iran, the Red Sea, and the Horn of Africa, while maintaining persistent air presence.

The Gideon variant delivered to Israel includes Israeli‑integrated communications, EW suites, and secure datalinks developed by Israel Aerospace Industries and Elbit Systems, allowing the aircraft to operate independently of U.S. command‑and‑control networks.

This independence is strategically crucial, as it ensures that Israel can conduct long‑range operations even in scenarios where U.S. assets are unavailable, politically constrained, or deployed elsewhere.

IAF Commander Maj. Gen. Omer Tischler stated that the KC‑46A “changes the geometry of Israeli reach,” enabling simultaneous refueling of stealth and non‑stealth aircraft while remaining protected by advanced missile‑warning and countermeasure systems.

The aircraft’s range of 11,800 kilometers and ability to offload fuel at high altitudes allow the IAF to launch strike packages from safer distances, reducing exposure to long‑range surface‑to‑air missile systems such as the S‑300 and S‑400.

As additional Gideon aircraft arrive through 2027, Israel will possess a fully modernized tanker fleet capable of supporting independent strategic operations, ensuring that the IAF’s long‑range strike arm remains one of the most capable in the world.
