As the war in Gaza intensifies, the IDF is undergoing a dramatic expansion of its armored ground capabilities.
On August 20, 2025, Israel’s Defense Ministry announced a sweeping $1.5 billion initiative to accelerate the production of advanced Israeli-made armored vehicles, including the Merkava Mk. 4 Barak tanks, Namer APCs, and Eitan wheeled APCs.
This surge, led by the Ministry’s Merkava and Armored Vehicles Directorate (MANTAK), is designed to bolster the IDF’s maneuvering power and reinforce Israel’s defense-industrial resilience.
The decision follows the proven battlefield success of these platforms during the Swords of Iron War, which began after Hamas’s October 7 assault.
According to the Defense Ministry, these vehicles have already logged over one million kilometers in combat operations.
The plan includes not only increased production rates but also infrastructure upgrades across Israel’s defense manufacturing sector.
Many of the factories contributing to the Merkava program are located in peripheral regions, and the initiative aims to expand their capacity while modernizing the IDF’s depot facilities.
Defense Minister Israel Katz and Ministry Director General Maj. Gen. (Res.) Amir Baram emphasized the strategic importance of armored vehicles in urban warfare. “The achievements of the Merkava, Namer, and Eitan on the battlefield are on a global scale,” Baram stated.
“Accelerating armored vehicle production is part of our strategy to support the IDF’s needs in the current conflict and to enhance readiness for an intense decade ahead”.
Pending final budgetary approval from the Knesset, the $1.5 billion surge represents one of the largest single investments in Israel’s ground forces in recent history.
It signals a long-term commitment to maintaining technological superiority and operational flexibility in the face of evolving threats.
