Besides fighting wars, the IDF has a secondary, unofficial position that is little known aboard, matchmaker of the State of Israel. Over the past 75 years tens of thousands of Israeli families got their start when the parents first met in the army. As part of this, some IDF soldiers have proposed in many unforgettable ways. These stories blend love, courage, and creativity amid war.

Here are several unique and heartwarming IDF marriage proposals from recent years:

Drone Banner Proposal Over Gaza
An IDF reservist proposed to his fiancée by flying a drone with a banner reading “Will you marry me?”. The gesture was captured by fellow soldiers and shared widely on social media, symbolizing love amid conflict. The proposal took place during a brief operational pause near the Gaza border. The event became a symbol of resilience and romance amid conflict. The proposal was reportedly coordinated with the help of drone operators from the Sky Rider unit, who ensured the banner was visible and safely flown in a secure zone.

Western Wall Surprise
In September 2024, an emotional IDF soldier proposed to his girlfriend at the Western Wall in Jerusalem. Despite serving in Gaza and facing daily danger, he knelt before her in one of Israel’s holiest sites, reminding the nation that love endures even in wartime.

Graduation Ceremony Proposal
During an IDF training graduation in October 2025, a soldier dropped to one knee in front of his girlfriend as fellow troops erupted in cheers and dance. The moment was celebrated as a symbol of new beginnings and unity.

Battlefield Romance in Arsuf
Staff Sergeant (Res.) Elkana Shezifi proposed to his partner Sarah at sunset in Arsuf after completing 280 days of reserve duty. Their relationship began via text while he was serving in Gaza, and the proposal was made with a ring gifted by a jeweler honoring his son killed in the Nova attack.

Electrifying Proposal by Injured Soldier
Ron Abutbul, critically injured in Operation Protective Edge, proposed to his girlfriend Lee atop a chimney 250 meters above sea level. The dramatic location and his recovery made the moment especially poignant.
