The new $1 billion Oron spy plane marks a transformative leap in aerial surveillance and strategic intelligence.

Developed through a collaboration between the Ministry of Defense Directorate of Defense Research and Development (MAFAT), Israel Aerospace Industries, and the IDF, Oron is now considered one of the most advanced reconnaissance aircraft in the world.

Based on the America- made Gulfstream G-550 executive jet platform, Oron was retrofitted with cutting-edge Israeli systems, including multi-spectrum radars, high-resolution imaging, and sophisticated signal interception tools.

What sets it apart is not just its technology, but its versatility.

Oron can operate across multiple theaters in a single mission, starting in Gaza, continuing through Lebanon, and even reaching Iran and Yemen all while providing real-time intelligence and strategic oversight.

Since its deployment, Oron has played a pivotal role in key operations, especially following the October 7th massacre and during the Iran conflict in June 2025.

It has provided early warnings, supported precision strikes, and enhanced Israel’s ability to monitor and respond to threats across the region.

According to IDF officials, Oron’s ability to stay airborne for 10 hours in any weather, reach 40,000 feet in 25 minutes, and maintain a cruising speed of 900 km/h makes it a game-changer.

Inside, the aircraft houses a team of eight intelligence officers, dozens of computers, and thousands of sensors.

Despite its compact size compared to traditional surveillance planes, Oron’s integration of Israeli-developed systems gives it unmatched capabilities.

Its stand-off range allows it to gather intelligence without flying directly over hostile territory, reducing risk while maintaining effectiveness.

The strategic value of Oron is already being recognized. On September 2, the developers behind the aircraft will receive the Israel Defense Prize, honoring its rapid development—completed in mere days during wartime—and its operational success.

The Oron spy plane is superior to other existing surveillance aircraft because it combines multi-domain intelligence, real-time operational versatility, and Israeli-engineered systems into a single, compact platform that few nations possess.

Most spy planes specialize in one domain—radar, signals intelligence, or imagery. Oron can do all of these simultaneously. In a single sortie, it can:

Monitor a high-value target in Rafah

Track a ballistic missile launch in Yemen

Identify a weapons convoy between Iraq and Syria

Pinpoint a suspect near a nuclear reactor in Iran

Escort an arrest operation in Jenin

This level of cross-theater integration is unmatched.

Oron is equipped with multi-spectrum radars, high-resolution cameras, and sophisticated signal interceptors, all fused by Israeli-developed AI systems.

It scans vast terrain cells and delivers real-time intelligence to the Air Force, Navy, and Intelligence Division—simultaneously.

Oron effectively merges the functions of Israel’s previous spy planes—Shavit (reconnaissance) and Eitam (control & surveillance)—and adds air-to-ground radar, imaging, and mission control. It’s essentially three aircraft in one.

In short, it’s not just a plane — it’s a flying command center, a sentinel in the sky, and a symbol of Israel’s commitment to technological superiority and national security.
