The Israeli military said it carried out a precise overnight strike in Tehran that killed senior Iranian official Ali Larijani, describing him as the effective leader of the Iranian regime in recent months.

According to reports, intelligence obtained late Monday night indicated that Ali Larijani, secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council, was staying in a safe apartment in a suburb of Tehran. After his presence at the location was confirmed, approval was given to carry out the strike.

At approximately 1:50 a.m., Israeli Air Force fighter jets reached the target and released precision-guided munitions that struck the apartment directly, killing Larijani.

In an official statement, the military said the operation was carried out overnight on March 17 using precise intelligence and unique operational capabilities.

“The Israeli Air Force carried out a precise strike in the heart of Tehran, guided by Military Intelligence, and eliminated Ali Larijani, secretary of the Supreme National Security Council, who served as the effective leader of the Iranian terror regime,” the statement said.

For years, Larijani was considered one of the most senior and influential figures in Iran’s leadership and a close associate of former Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei.

After Khamenei’s elimination earlier in the conflict, Israeli officials said Larijani consolidated his position as the regime’s acting leader and directed operations against Israel and other regional states.

According to the military statement, Larijani oversaw the regime’s political and security coordination and played a key role in directing international activity on behalf of the government. He was also involved in suppressing recent anti-government protests inside Iran.

“During the recent wave of protests against the regime, Larijani personally oversaw violent enforcement operations and the massacre carried out against Iranian protesters,” the statement said.

The strike was part of Operation “Roaring Lion,” the ongoing Israeli campaign targeting senior commanders and leadership figures within Iran’s military and security apparatus.

Iranian opposition outlet Iran International reported that Larijani was killed along with his deputy on the Supreme National Security Council and his son, who served as his special adviser. The report said the strike targeted a meeting connected to Basij forces that was discussing preparations to suppress potential protests ahead of the upcoming Chaharshanbe Suri festival.

In a separate official statement, the Israeli military said a precise strike in Tehran also killed Gholam Reza Soleimani, who had served as commander of Iran’s Basij militia for the past six years.

“Yesterday, in a targeted strike in the heart of Tehran guided by Military Intelligence, the Israeli Air Force eliminated Gholam Reza Soleimani, commander of the Basij forces,” the statement said.

The Basij militia is part of Iran’s security apparatus and has played a central role in suppressing domestic protests. According to the military, forces under Soleimani’s command led major repression campaigns against demonstrators, including widespread arrests and violent crackdowns.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu confirmed the strikes, saying the operations are part of a broader effort to weaken the Iranian regime.

“This morning we eliminated Ali Larijani and the commander of the Basij,” Netanyahu said. “We are shaking this regime in the hope of giving the Iranian people an opportunity to remove it.”

Larijani’s elimination marks another major blow to Iran’s leadership as Israel continues targeting senior figures tied to the regime’s military and security apparatus.
