Israeli forces operating in Syria located, retrieved, and identified the remains of a fallen IDF soldier declared missing in action nearly half a century ago, according to a joint statement from the Prime Minister’s Office, IDF, and Mossad, announced on Sunday.

The Israeli military and Mossad intelligence agency issued a joint statement, announcing that the remains of Sgt. First Class Tzvi Feldman have been returned to Israel.

In a special operation led by the IDF and the Mossad, Feldman’s remains were located deep within Syrian territory, and his repatriation, decades after his disappearance, has already taken place.

Upon their arrival in Israel, the IDF Rabbinate’s DNA Identification Center for Fallen Soldiers examined the remains, positively identifying them as belonging to Feldman.

Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu posted a message on X:

“In a special operation by the Mossad and the IDF, we have brought home the body of armored corps soldier Staff Sergeant Zvi Feldman, of blessed memory, who fell in battle at Sultan Yacoub in June 1982 during the First Lebanon War.’

‘For decades, Zvika was missing, and the efforts to locate him—alongside the other soldiers missing from that battle—never ceased for a moment.’

‘About six years ago, we brought Staff Sergeant Zachary Baumel, of blessed memory, to a Jewish burial. Today, we have brought Zvika, of blessed memory, home.

‘And we will not stop working to bring back Staff Sergeant Yehuda Katz, who is still missing from that same battle.’

‘Dear parents Penina and Avraham never stopped their efforts on this issue, and sadly they have already passed away.’

‘We now return to you—Itzik, Shlomo, and Anat—your beloved Zvika, to you and to the soil of the Land of Israel that he so dearly loved.’

‘As the prophet Jeremiah said:

“‘There is hope for your future, declares the Lord, and your children shall return to their own border.'”
