Israeli security forces dispersed a pro-terror gathering and subsequent violent riots on Tuesday near Birzeit University, following advance intelligence warnings of an event supporting terrorism in the area.
According to the Israel Defense Forces, security officials had identified preparations for a pro-terror assembly in recent days within the sector of the Binyamin Brigade. When the gathering began, IDF troops and Israel Border Police units entered the area to prevent the event from escalating.
Birzeit University is located in the village of Birzeit, north of Ramallah, and is one of the Palestinian Authority’s most influential academic institutions, long associated with political and student activism. The university serves approximately 15,000 students.
The forces employed crowd-dispersal measures and fired warning shots into the air only, successfully breaking up the initial gathering.
Shortly afterward, a second and more severe disturbance developed, involving hundreds of rioters. According to the IDF, suspects hurled stones and large rocks from rooftops toward Israeli forces, creating an immediate and serious threat to their safety. Troops responded with riot-control measures and targeted fire toward key violent instigators in order to neutralize the danger.
The IDF stressed that it will continue to act decisively to prevent incitement and expressions of support for terrorism, emphasizing that such activity poses a direct threat to Israeli civilians and security forces.
Palestinian sources claimed that 11 people were injured during the clashes, alleging that five were wounded by live fire, four by tear gas inhalation, and two as a result of falls. The injured, some of whom were identified as students, were reportedly transferred to hospitals for medical treatment.
Birzeit University officials accused Israeli forces of using live ammunition and deploying tear gas and stun grenades inside the campus, as well as breaching the university’s main gate and entering several buildings.
Israeli officials counter that the operation followed concrete intelligence warnings and violent attacks on troops, placing responsibility for the escalation on those who turned the gathering into a coordinated riot.
