Staff Sgt. Yaron “Noni” Oree Shay, a twenty-one-year-old combat soldier in the Israel Defense Forces’ Nahal Brigade, displayed a level of fierce bravery on October 7, 2023, that ultimately prevented a catastrophic massacre at Kibbutz Kerem Shalom.
Stationed at the closest Israeli community to the southern Gaza Strip border, Yaron and his small unit found themselves on the absolute front line when the border fence was violently breached.
Around 7:00 AM, a border lookout spotted a swarm of approximately one hundred heavily armed Nukhba terrorists advancing in coordinated, multi-wave assaults.
Vastly outnumbered, Yaron and his squad immediately rushed toward the perimeter to intercept the incoming forces, positioning themselves as a human shield before the terrorists could breach the civilian residential quarters.
For over thirty minutes, Yaron’s unit stood their ground, engaging the terrorists in heavy, close-quarters combat.
Their relentless defense fractured the momentum of the initial assault, buying critical time. During this brutal exchange of gunfire, Yaron was mortally wounded and made the ultimate sacrifice.
However, the precious minutes his unit bought allowed the kibbutz’s local civilian security team to fully mobilize, secure the perimeter, and successfully repulse the remaining attackers.
Because of the incredible heroism of Yaron, his fellow soldiers, and the local defense team, every single resident hidden inside the kibbutz homes survived the day.

Refusing to let destruction have the final word, Yaron’s family turned their profound grief into a global movement of resilience by launching the “Next October” initiative.
This ambitious project aims to facilitate the creation and dedication of innovative Israeli startups to commemorate each soldier and civilian lost during the conflict.
Today, hundreds of high-tech startups have joined the initiative, adopting the families of fallen heroes, providing support, and dedicating their technological breakthroughs to preserving a living memory.
On the ground, a dedicated music room was constructed directly inside Kibbutz Kerem Shalom in Yaron’s memory, ensuring his passion for music and his ultimate act of bravery will permanently echo through the community he saved.
