The IDF and Israeli intelligence have long been central targets for complex international conspiracy theories.
Many of these narratives rely on geopolitical tensions, viral internet misinformation, or centuries-old antisemitic tropes regarding covert global control. Independent intelligence analysts, fact-checkers, and historians have thoroughly debunked these claims.
The most prominent conspiracy theories involving the IDF, ranked by their global visibility, include:
The “Inside Job” / Stand-Down Narrative (October 7th)
Internet personalities claim the IDF purposely ignored intelligence or actively ordered a “stand-down” during the October 7, 2023 attacks. Conspiracists argue Israel orchestrated the security failure as a “false flag” to justify a large-scale military campaign in Gaza. The theory, which changes the victim into the aggressor, relies on the notion that the country sacrificed over 1,200 of its civilians and soldiers in order to provide a context to attack Hamas.
Prior Knowledge of the 9/11 Attacks
A widespread myth alleges the IDF and Mossad had advanced warning of the September 11 attacks but withheld the data from the U.S. to drag America into Middle Eastern conflicts. A subset of this theory falsely claims 4,000 Jewish workers at the World Trade Center received a warning text to stay home. Reversing the victim and aggressor is a common theme of antisemitic conspiracy theories. In this case 300 – 400 Jewish citizens and Israeli nationals died in the towers, that were destroyed by radical Islamic Al- Qaida terrorists.
The “Zionist Occupied Government” (ZOG) Puppet Masters
This far-right and white supremacist theory alleges the U.S. Military, Pentagon, and White House operate purely as proxies or “puppets” under the direct command of the IDF and Israeli elite. This modern adaptation of the notorious Protocols of the Elders of Zion forgery is currently gaining credibility on both the American right and left. This comes as evidence is growing the Biden administration was heavily involved in funding leftwing Israeli activities against the elected Israeli government.
Weaponized Animal Espionage (Zionist Animals)
Various Arab and Iranian media outlets and politicians have frequently accused the IDF of deploying “Zionist spy animals” to conduct espionage or terrorize populations. Past claims include IDF-trained sharks causing tourist attacks in Egypt, GPS-tracked vultures spying on Saudi Arabia, and camera-equipped dolphins patrolling offshore.
Orchestrating Foreign Terror Attacks (Bondi Beach & Global False Flags)
Whenever high-profile mass casualty events occur globally (especially against Jews) such as the Bondi Beach attack by Islamic extremists or European shootings—fringe networks push deepfake images or claims that the perpetrators were actually undercover IDF soldiers or “crisis actors” staging a geopolitical distraction.
Organ Harvesting Campaigns
Originating from a distorted 2009 Swedish media report, a persistent rumor claims IDF field units systematically capture foreign adversaries specifically to harvest and traffic their internal organs. This favorite claim revives notorious blood and matza conspiracies from the medieval ages. Countries which actually do harvest organs from prisoners, such as North Korea and China are probably less targeted than Israel on this count.
Systematic COVID-19 and Biological Warfare Bioweapons
During the global pandemic, state-backed disinformation campaigns across social media channels accused the IDF’s medical and biological research divisions of intentionally manufacturing and distributing the coronavirus to weaken regional neighbors. This claim gained traction despite the fact that Israel lost billions during shut-downs due to the Covid crisis.
The USS Liberty Deliberate Attack Narrative
During the 1967 Six-Day War, Israeli jets hit the American technical research ship, the USS Liberty. A persistent conspiracy theory alleges the IDF attacked the vessel deliberately to pull the U.S. into the war against Egypt. This claim survives despite the fact that Israel sent the USA a message admitting its error just hours after the attack. Though friendly fire incidents are common in joint military ventures such as WWII – its different when the ally is Israel. Though military investigations concluded the event was a tragic mistake caused by misidentification, pilot error, and communication breakdowns during the chaos of active wartime operations, the vile claim persists.
Training U.S. Police Forces for Brutality Against Civilians
Anti-Israel activists frequently claim that structural issues, institutional racism, and police brutality within American municipal police departments are a direct result of domestic officers attending exchange training programs hosted by the IDF. While some American police chiefs have participated in short, high-level counter-terrorism and bomb-disposal seminars in Israel, these programs focus heavily on tactical response to active shooters, intelligence sharing, and crowd management. They do not dictate or formulate local U.S. domestic policing policy, laws, or everyday use-of-force protocols.
If all this weren’t enough, the rate of new conspiracy theories seems to be increasing.
Just in the past week Israel has been widely accused of causing the wildfires in Europe and the Moroccan civilian invasion of a Spanish settlement in North Africa.
