The IDF has been pioneering the use of specialized drone swarms designed for the interior of enemy buildings, a capability that represents a significant leap in urban warfare tactics.
Central to this effort is the “Seek & Strike” program, developed by Israel’s Directorate of Defense Research & Development (DDR&D) in collaboration with Elbit Systems and the IDF Ground Forces.
This system involves coordinated groups of mini-aerial drones that function as a networked unit, sharing data in real time to map the layout configurations of hostile structures and detonate booby traps before soldiers enter.
The program began pilot testing in 2022, with initial swarms deployed for training in 2023, and by 2024, DDR&D expanded funding after successful operational trials in Gaza. Full integration into IDF combat brigades is expected by 2026.
A specific product that fits this interior combat role is the Spike FireFly, a miniature tactical loitering munition produced by Rafael Advanced Systems.
Designed for use by dismounted infantry, marines, and special forces in urban warfare, the FireFly can be packed in a backpack and deployed to provide lethal overmatch inside buildings.
A single system contains three munitions held in tubes and a one-kilogram control unit, totaling 15 kilograms carried by one operator.
The FireFly has a battery life of 15 to 30 minutes, making it effective as an area-denial sentry in no-go zones.
In an apparent world first, the IDF deployed drone swarms in Gaza fighting, using “flocks” of small aircraft all communicating with each other to locate, identify, and attack Hamas militants.
These swarms are equipped with advanced ISR (intelligence, surveillance, reconnaissance) capabilities, terrain dominance features, and strike payloads tailored for both open and urban battlefields.
By integrating AI-driven systems, the IDF can reduce exposure of frontline troops while ensuring rapid response to evolving threats, marking a decisive shift toward autonomous battlefield dominance.
