Israeli special forces carried out an overnight operation in southern Lebanon, capturing a senior commander from a Hamas-linked Sunni Islamist terror group, the IDF confirmed Monday.
Lebanese media reported that Israeli forces crossed into Lebanese airspace and conducted a raid in the village of al-Habbariyeh in the al-Arqoub region, roughly four kilometers north of the Israeli border.
During the operation, troops entered the home of Atwi Atwi, a senior figure in al-Jamaa al-Islamiyya, and detained him.
The group, also known as the Islamic Group, is the Lebanese branch of the Muslim Brotherhood and maintains ties with both Hamas and Hezbollah.
The Israel Defense Forces said forces from the 210th Division conducted the nighttime raid in the Mount Dov area based on intelligence gathered in recent weeks.
The suspect was transferred to Israel for interrogation, and weapons were seized at the site.
According to Israeli officials, Atwi was targeted for his role in recruiting operatives and working to establish terrorist infrastructure in the Mount Dov area for future attacks against Israel.
