As speculation swirls over a possible U.S. strike on Iran and warnings from Tehran of retaliation against Israel, the Israel Defense Forces moved Wednesday to clarify the situation and urge the public to avoid rumors, saying the military is monitoring developments closely and remains prepared.

IDF spokesperson Effie Defrin said the military is holding ongoing situation assessments in light of regional developments and the rising volume of reports circulating on social media.

“I am aware of the publications over the past day, and especially in the last few hours,” Defrin said, stressing that the IDF is closely tracking events. He noted that the chief of staff has ordered heightened defensive readiness across all formations and emphasized that the military is prepared for any scenario.

At the same time, Defrin underscored that there has been no change to Home Front Command guidelines and urged Israelis to rely only on official IDF statements and avoid spreading unverified information that could cause unnecessary concern.

The IDF message came against a backdrop of escalating rhetoric from Iran and mounting uncertainty across the region. Iran’s leadership has issued repeated warnings against any potential U.S. military action, as unrest continues to spread inside the Islamic Republic.

Speaking before Iran’s parliament earlier this week, Speaker Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf said that if the United States were to strike Iran, Tehran would respond directly, describing Israeli targets and U.S. military bases in the region as “legitimate targets.”

Iranian officials have also increasingly pointed the finger at Israel and the United States for the protests sweeping the country.

Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi accused both countries of responsibility for the unrest and vowed retaliation, claiming the situation had moved beyond demonstrations into what he described as organized violence against the state. “What is happening now is no longer protest,” he said earlier this week. “It is a terrorist war against our country.”

Amid the rising tensions, reports of heightened Israeli readiness and deliberations in Washington have fueled a steady stream of commentary and speculation online, adding to public anxiety. The IDF’s statement appeared aimed at striking a balance between transparency and restraint — signaling readiness without amplifying fears.

“We are in full monitoring mode and prepared for any development,” Defrin said, adding that updates would be provided if the situation changes. For now, the military stressed, daily life in Israel can continue as usual.

With sharp rhetoric from Tehran, uncertainty in Washington, and an unsettled regional picture, the IDF says it is maintaining heightened vigilance, continuing continuous assessments, and stands ready to respond to any development as regional tensions remain elevated.
