Major Ofek Bacher, 24, from Ness Ziona, served as a company commander in the elite reconnaissance unit of the Golani Brigade.

On October 16, 2024, he was killed in action alongside four comrades during a mission in southern Lebanon, where they encountered Hezbollah operatives.

Their deaths occurred in the midst of the Iron Swords War, which erupted after the horrific October 7, 2023, assault by Hamas terrorists and Palestinian rioters, launching a prolonged and deadly conflict for Israel.

Family and Upbringing

Ofek was the beloved son of Yehuda and Ronit Bacher and the brother of Shagai and Ofir.

Raised in Ness Ziona and a graduate of the Golda School, he was surrounded by a tight-knit circle of family and friends who admired his strength, loyalty, and character.

Those closest to him recall a young man of great courage who drew people in and inspired those around him.

Military Path and Ultimate Sacrifice

Ofek began his IDF service in the Egoz Unit, known for its rigorous training and high standards.

There, he developed as a soldier and a leader. In 2024, he transferred to Golani’s reconnaissance battalion, where he took command of a company.

Ofek was known for leading from the front — he stood shoulder to shoulder with his men, never asking of them what he wouldn’t do himself.

When Hamas launched its attack on October 7, Ofek happened to be on leave.

Without hesitation, he and several friends rushed to Kfar Aza, where they fought back against infiltrating terrorists and helped evacuate the wounded.

During the battle, he was shot in the shoulder. Despite the injury, he returned swiftly to his unit, determined to continue leading his soldiers.

Just days later, on October 16, while conducting a high-risk operation to uncover terrorist infrastructure in a building in southern Lebanon, Ofek’s team was ambushed by hidden Hezbollah gunmen.

A fierce exchange of fire followed. Though the terrorists were neutralized, the operation ended in tragedy with the loss of Ofek and four fellow soldiers.

Dedication Beyond the Call

Throughout his service, Ofek exemplified unwavering commitment to his comrades and his country.

Even after sustaining a combat wound, he chose to rejoin his unit and press on. His actions during the war captured the essence of valor and selfless service.

Remembering a Hero

Ness Ziona grieved deeply upon learning of Ofek’s death.

His funeral, held at the city’s military cemetery, was attended by mourning family, friends, and a grieving community that honored him as a hero.

Ofek Bachar’s life was marked by courage, sacrifice, and deep responsibility.

His legacy endures as a symbol of the spirit and resilience of Israel’s defenders — a young leader whose memory continues to inspire.
