The Israel Defense Forces carried out airstrikes in southern Lebanon on Monday after issuing evacuation notices to residents of several villages, warning that it would soon target Hezbollah infrastructure in the area.
In a statement, the IDF said it was striking targets belonging to the terror organizations Hezbollah and Hamas in Lebanon, as part of ongoing efforts to degrade their operational capabilities.
The evacuation warning, released by the IDF’s Arabic-language spokesperson, came shortly before the strikes and urged civilians to distance themselves from the sites.
The airstrikes followed a series of targeted operations against Hezbollah terrorists over the past day. The IDF said Monday that it eliminated two Hezbollah terrorists in a strike carried out Sunday in the Jmeijmeh area of southern Lebanon.
According to the military, the two were involved in efforts to rebuild Hezbollah’s military infrastructure, activity described as a blatant violation of the understandings between Israel and Lebanon.
Separately, Lebanese media reported on Monday that an Israeli drone struck a vehicle in the village of Briqueh in the Nabatieh area of southern Lebanon, resulting in the elimination of a third Hezbollah terrorist within a 24-hour period.
The escalation comes against the backdrop of mounting international pressure on Beirut. A White House deadline that expired as the year ended required Lebanon to demonstrate significant progress in disarming Hezbollah and dismantling its military infrastructure.
U.S. officials have repeatedly warned that failure to comply with existing ceasefire arrangements could lead to renewed Israeli military operations, amid reports that President Donald Trump has given Israel latitude to act against the Iranian-backed group.
The IDF said it will continue to operate to remove any threat and prevent Hezbollah from reestablishing military capabilities that endanger Israel’s northern communities.
