Israel’s defense establishment is quietly exploring what some analysts are calling the country’s next potential superweapon: a high‑energy space‑based laser system designed to intercept missiles, drones, and even hypersonic threats from orbit.

While Israel has not officially confirmed such a program, multiple defense‑industry leaks, statements from Rafael Advanced Defense Systems, and references in Knesset Defense Committee briefings between 2024 and 2026 point to accelerated research into orbital laser platforms.

The concept builds on Israel’s existing laser program, including the Iron Beam, a 100‑kilowatt class ground‑based laser first tested successfully in 2022, and on the country’s long‑standing cooperation with the United States on directed‑energy research through the U.S.–Israel Strategic Defense Partnership Act.

A space‑based laser would represent a dramatic leap beyond Iron Beam.

Operating from low Earth orbit, such a system could theoretically deliver continuous interception coverage over Israel’s airspace, unaffected by weather, dust, or atmospheric turbulence—limitations that currently reduce the efficiency of ground‑based lasers.

If Israel succeeds, it would become the first nation in history to operate a military laser in space with potential anti‑satellite and missile‑interception capability.
